A BASIC discovery

Fr. Gregor Mendel was the Augustinian friar who is credited as the father of modern genetics. Mendel cultivated and tested about 29,000 pea plants between 1856 and 1863.As a result he made two generalizations, the Law of Segregation and the Law of Independent Assortment, which later became known as Mendel's Laws of Inheritance.

Interestingly, his paper on the subject did not garner much interest in his lifetime. In his day the theory of blended inheritance was held by most biologists. As many of Charles Darwin's ideas were found unsuccessul, Mendel's ideas were uncovered in the early twentieth century,

His story is evidence of the complimentary relationship between Faith, Science and Reason. Tonight is the second of a six part BASIC series presented by Fr. Kevin Vogel and Dr. Gintaras Duda.
