Finishing Touches on the Construction

Above and below you can see the difference of putting tile on the floor by the elevator in the Social Level of the church.

You also may have noticed that the railings by the southeast entrance have received its first coat of paint.

In addition, the awning now has a metal cover on it (below) to match the awning on the south side of the Social Level entrance.

Celebrating the End of Construction

On the Feast of St. Columbkille yesterday we celebrated the end of construction for our Source & Summit Campaign.

The Knights grilled hamburgers and hot dogs and we went through two kegs donated by Upstream as we estimate over 700 people were able to join us.

People seemed happy even waiting in line.

A New Door

When the church was designed, the eastern doors were seen primarily as fire exits. But they have become heavily used over time.

 The new door for the South East corner of the church arrived yesterday.

It gives a different look from the inside ...

... and the outside.

When is the Elevator gonna be ready?

Before we let anyone else in, we'd better make Fr Vogel test ride it.

Fr. Steinhausen Would Approve

Sr. Delores Dolezal taught 2nd grade in our school and CCD in the 1980's. (She's pictured above visiting our preschool during Catholic Schools Week last year.) She was also part of the team that planned the current church with Fr. Steinhausen. This morning she was here for Mass and got to see the changes.

She said she was initially disappointed when she learned the rising Jesus was going to be moved, but now that she saw the crucifix and the changes she likes it. She said "Fr. Steinhausen would approve!"

Every 30 Years

This week the fabric above the altar was replaced.

The scaffolding was put up Monday, which

meant some rearranging for daily Masses.

We had a request to get a picture of Fr. Vogel climbing the side

The last of the pieces was installed this morning. One of the

 workers said, "This should be good for another 30 years."

The purpose of the screen to cover the organ speakers and the drop down screen. The hope is that the new color will camouflage it a little more.

Why can't we use this door?

From the inside, this door/exit doesn't look any different other than the Danger signs.

But it's very different on the outside.

When our church was first built, the two east doors were thought of primarily as fire exits. Today they are used by so many, that it is proper for the approach to be more attractive and the door to not look like the type entering a garage.

 Although there is more work to be done, what may

 take the longest now is the inspection process.

About the baptismal font ....

Question: What is the liturgical reason for having the baptismal font empty in Easter?

Answer: There is no liturgical reason for it being empty, just a practical one. When the font was emptied for Holy Week, we discovered there was glue or sealant leaking through. It looks like it will be several weeks before it is fixed.

There have been a lot of changes to the room once used by our ushers and servers as we prepare for an elevator here.

What's Next?

Obviously (as we posted Saturday) work is continuing on the elevator. But what else is being done as part of the Source & Summit campaign?

After Easter, the SouthEast door and steps will be redone. When the church was designed, the SouthEast and NorthEast doors were thought of primarily as fire exits. But those doors are the main way many enter our church today. The steps will extended, the new door will have glass in it and there will be an overhang.

The organ speakers above the crucifix will be recovered.

Most of the cabinets will be removed from the old sacristy to create a sitting space that can be used by families before a wedding or a funeral.

So the work continues...
