Our Lady of the Rosary

On this day in 1571, the Holy League in Europe defeated the Ottoman Empire. Some Western historians consider it one of the most significant Navel Battles anywhere in the globe. The victory gave the Holy League control over the Mediterranean, protected Rome from invasion, and prevented the Ottomans from advancing further into Europe.

The Holy League credited the victory to the Virgin Mary, whose intercession with God they had implored for victory through the use of the Rosary. Andrea Doria had kept a copy of the miraculous image of our Our Lady of Guadalupe given to him by King Philip II of Spain in his ship's state room. Pope Pius V instituted a new Catholic feast day of Our Lady of Victory to commemorate the battle, which is now celebrated by the Catholic Church as the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary.

Today there are still times when we encourage people to pray the rosary together.
  • At noon Saturday, October 16th there will be a Rosary Rally in the west parking lot of the church as a public act or reparation for sins perpetuated against the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary;
  • At 6:30 am and 9:00 pm each Wednesday there is prayer in the church chapel for our children. Anyone can come, you need only bring a rosary;
  • From September 22nd to November 1st people will be praying 24 hours a day in front of the Bellevue Abortion Mill. Specifically, parishioners from St. Columbkille will be there from 8:00 am Saturday until 8:00 am Sunday. If you would like to be scheduled, contact Mike or Lynn at 339-1947 or michaelpjones1@cox.net.
