Icons of Mary

First Grade students at St. Columbkille Catholic School learned how to be Iconographers. The process of praying and writing is very important in creating a proper icon.

Fr. Vogel was able to bless the icons.

Making Icons

Preparing for the Immaculate Conception last month, First Grade students at St. Columbkille Catholic School wrote icons.

To properly write and icon, there are a
number of rules which must be followed.

They brought their icons to the church
 where Fr Damian blessed them.

Icons of Mary

The first grade students at St. Columbkille Catholic
School learned first hand how to be iconographers.

They learned that icons are not "drawn"
 or "painted," they are "written."

A very important part of writing an icon is prayer.

You can not write an icon without praying.

After we wrote our icons, Deacon Krueger
came to our classrooms and blessed them.

These icons help us to remember Mary,
the Mother of God on this holy day.

Iconographers

Recently some parents of First Grade students helped teach the classes at St Columbkille Catholic School how to write an Icon.

There are rules for how to write an icon
(they are not drawn or painted.)
It is a very prayerful process.

The icons were blessed by Fr. Vogel.
Today some are in the church narthex
so they can remind people of
The Immaculate Conception.

Iconography

There is an art and a spirituality involved in creating icons. They are "written" not "drawn." Prayer is very involved as well.

Before they start, the iconographer prays. They ask God to help them in the process including helping them choose the colors to use.

The First Graders at St. Columbkille Catholic School recently studied the process and wrote icons of Mary and Jesus.

Last week Fr. Wee came to each class and blessed the icons.
