This
morning, Deacon Krueger stopped by the preschool on his way to Mass. He spoke to the preschool children about Ash
Wednesday and the season of Lent. After
his teaching, we lined up to receive our ashes.

Icons of Mary
The first grade students at St. Columbkille Catholic
School learned first hand how to be iconographers.
They learned that icons are not "drawn"
or "painted," they are "written."
A very important part of writing an icon is prayer.
You can not write an icon without praying.
After we wrote our icons, Deacon Krueger
came to our classrooms and blessed them.
These icons help us to remember Mary,
the Mother of God on this holy day.

Ashes in Preschool
On Ash Wednesday Deacon Krueger visited
the Preschool for a short Lenten Service.
He read the day's Gospel and we talked a little about it.
Deacon Krueger blessed the ashes then made
the sign of the cross on our forehead.
We finished the service with the Our Father.
It was a special way to begin the Lenten Season.

St. Blaise
St. Blaise was a bishop of Sebastea in Armenia who was martyred under the reign of Licinius in the early fourth century. His prayer is attributed to have saved the life of a boy with a fish bone stuck in his throat.
For centuries it has been a tradition to
offer a blessing of throats on his feast day.
Between Fr. Vogel and three deacons over
six hundred throats were blessed this morning.

Pajama Day
Thursday was a busy day at preschool.
We wore pajamas to school for Pajama Day.
We also had a math lesson with candy hearts.
At the end of the day, Deacon Krueger came to the
preschool to bless our throats for the Feast of St. Blaise.

Another Deacon
On Friday Archbishop Lucas assigned Deacon David Krueger to serve St. Columbkille Parish. Dcn David is not a stranger as he has been working for the parish since 2007.
Deacons are assigned to parishes by their bishop. Although it varies from diocese to diocese, Archbishop Lucas takes into account the needs of the parish and the deacon in making his assignments. He had previously been serving at St. Patrick's Church in Fremont.
Dcn David said, "It is with joy that I will begin to serve the St. Columbkille community in a new way."
Dcn David his wife, VanNessa, and their three children moved to Papillion this spring.

Deacons at INET
Three of the deacons associated with St. Columbkille are involved with the INET conference today exploring RCIA.
Deacon Bill Hill is leading a workshop based on the Come and See classes at St. Columbkille. Some people who are considering entering the Church are in a different place that those entering RCIA. Come and See allows some of those people a safe place to consider what it means to be Catholic.
Deacon Eric Vande Berg is part of the group putting on INET. We appreciate his year round effort to help parishes in the Archdioces learn from one another and grow together.
