Meeting the Author and Illustrator

 Michelle Nelson-Schmidt visited
 St. Columbkille Catholic School today.

Mrs. Nelson-Schmidt is an author and illustrator of books like Dogs, Dogs!, Cats, Cats! and Jonathan James and the Whatif Monster.

She first realized her love for drawing at the age of four. She painted her first oil painting when she was 15 and was so in love with the feel of paint on canvas that it was intoxicating. She would paint late into the night until her hands cramped and she got dizzy from the fumes.

As a 15 year old, this was her painting of the dog her mother wished she could own.(And the painting her mother worries she will lose.)

When  Mrs. Nelson-Schmidt realized what she ought to be doing she said it felt like "sunshine on my heart."

The message of her latest book, Jonathan James and the Whatif Monster, is of a young boy who doubts himself yet overcomes his fears with the realization that by taking risks he can succeed. This reflects the message Mrs. Nelson-Schmidt gave to the students. She told about the determination and resolve she needed to turn her dream of becoming a published author into a reality while publishers were rejecting her manuscripts for three years.

We appreciate Mrs. Nelson-Schmidt visiting
our school and sharing her story with us.
