Congratulations Mr. Batter

David Batter has accepted the teaching position of Director of Choral Activities at the University of Nebraska Omaha. He wasn't looking for another job, but felt this was an opportunity he couldn't pass up. We are delighted for him.

David will continue to direct the Adult Choir for now. When a new person is chosen he will assist them in the transition as well. Fr. Damian will put together a group of people as we do a national search for his replacement.

See John ordained in Rome

To My Friends and My Parish Family in Christ:

I am now back at school, beginning my third year of theological studies at the North American College in Rome. This past week we have been preparing and giving practice homilies as we move forward in formation. God willing, next year on October 4, 2012, I will be ordained a transitional deacon here at St. Peter’s Basilica. Please continue to pray for me in this year of preparation for Holy Orders.

Sincerely yours in the Lord,
John Norman
Do you want to go?

Fr. Paul Hoesing will be leading a pilgrimage to Rome the week of John's diaconate ordination. Fr. Hoesing is the Vocations Director of the Archdiocese of Omaha, a graduate of the North American College, and an excellent guide to encounter Rome on pilgrimage. This trip will depart Omaha on Saturday, September 29 and return to Omaha on Saturday, October 7.

The trip will include:

• A visit to St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican
• A Wednesday audience with Pope Benedict XVI
• A day trip to Assisi
• A visit to the Pontifical North American College
• A walk through Ancient Rome
• An introduction to Italian cuisine
• The 2012 NAC Diaconate Ordination
• A celebratory banquet on the evening of the ordination
• A Mass of Thanksgiving at which John will assist as a Deacon and preach for the first time

The estimated cost for this trip is around $3000-3200/person. If you are interested in more information, please email or call:

Vocations Office
402-558-3100

Even if you can't make it to Rome, please mark October 12, 2012 on your calendar and pray for John on that day. God willing John will be ordained a priest on June 1, 2013 in St. Cecelia's Cathedral in Omaha, so you may want to set that date aside as well.

In 40 Days...

In 40 days we implement
the New Roman Missal

We've been talking about the New Roman Missal at
our Masses, we've had articles in the bulletin and
there have been Monday classes about it as well.

But on Sunday, November 27th Advent begins
and our current Sacramentary is history.

We're excited for the change!

Fr. Steinhausen Day

This day in 1984 was celebrated as "Fr. Steinhausen Day" at St. Columbkille Catholic School.

Then Principal Bob Voboril said, "When I came to St. Columbkille's, the first thing he told me, was that if our school wasn't Catholic it wouldn't be anything. He insists that the religious formation of our youngsters be the first priority."

Voboril also credited Fr. Steinhausen as critical in the school's growth. Despite a large parish debt he authorized the first contract with a lay principal, expansion of the school's salary scale and permitted hiring an additional teacher rather than reimpose limits on class size.

The student council gave him gag gifts of the right to change his birthday to sometime other than December 25th, a permanent hall pass and a locker in the school.

In one week (October 23rd) there will be a celebration of 95 years of the school. Alumni, their parents and friends of the school are all invited to visit from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.

After a Fun Lunch he joined the 7th graders as they took on the 8th graders...

 So how did he do?

The crowd seemed pleased.

What if your enemy wrote your bio?

St. Callistus was a pope who died as a martyr in the year 222. Interestingly, the only biography we have of him was written by a rival, St. Hippolytus. When it was time to choose a pope, the deacon and former slave Callistus was chosen over Hippolytus.

Hippolytus was very strict and rigid in the way he followed rules and regulations. This was also true of the early Church which had been very rough on those who committed sins of adultery, murder, and fornication.

In contrast Callistus showed mercy to repentant sinners by allowing them back into communion of the Church after they had performed public penance. Callistus also promoted equality among Church members. For example, he accepted marraiges between slaves and free people. Hippolytus was enraged by this as he considered it degrading to the Church.

Fortunately the Church has continued to follow the path of St. Callistus.
