An Active Day

It wasn't just priest appreciation Sunday today.

Yesterday a book sale was set up, raising funds
for Backpack Buddies and the Tri-City Pantry.

St. Vincent de Paul was collecting gently
used coats and winter gear to help others.

Baby Bottles were distributed so people can collect change
for Essential Pregnancy Services Counseling Center.

Children's Liturgy of the Word is back in full swing during the 10:30 Mass so our younger folks can discuss the same Gospel and readings used in Mass.

Helping in Lent

Principal Janet Wilson from St. Matthew Catholic School, Principal Dana Martin from Holy Ghost Catholic School, Principal Dr. Cheryl Blue of St. Columbkille Catholic School and Principal Lynn Schultz from St. Bernadette Catholic School coordinated the four schools to come together for a common lenten project helping the St. Vincent de Paul food pantry.

Students from all four schools collected items like school supplies, books, toothbrushes, shampoos, and other items for families who need them.

In addition, stuffed animals were collected to be given to the police in Papillion, La Vista and Bellevue so the officers can give them to children in times of stress.

The 8th grade students from all four schools gathered at St. Columbkille yesterday to sort these items for families. Each student got a bag and collected items from each of the areas.

These were given to the St. Vincent de Paul food pantry.

Then the students had snacks.

It was good for the students to meet people from other schools. They were able to talk about a variety of things such as comparing school lunches and High School plans.

Then everyone lined up for a group picture.

Thank you for coming together and helping those in need!

St. Vincent de Paul Omaha Council Meeting

Those attending the 7:30 Mass may have been surprised to see Archbishop Lucas there. He was here as we hosted the Omaha Chapter meeting of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. (Hear his homily here.)

Breakfast was served through the help of the Knights of Columbus and our youth who helped serve as well.

At this gathering of the Omaha District Council parishes throughout the diocese were represented.

Fr. Damian spoke to the group:

As did Archbishop Lucas:

The Kampschneider family was recognized with the Top Hat award. Besides Mary Jo being a past president of the St. Columbkille chapter, there entire family does a remarkable job with the Use it Again sale. They gather items throughout the year and fill their garage with items as thousands of dollars are raised each year.

Arlene Mayberger of St. Leo's parish also received the Top Hat award. Arlene was recognized for her contribution as she not only helps people get the help they need, but assists them so they won't need help in the future.

Congratulations to the
Top Hat award recipients.

St. Vincent de Paul

Today is the feast day of St. Vincent de Paul. He was so devoted to taking care of the poor that his very name is synonymous with helping those in need.

When someone calls St. Columbkille parish needing help, they are turned over to our St. Vincent de Paul Conference. Their needs are turned over to two members of the group. Beyond working within a criteria, they go to where the people live.

They make human contact to those in need and listen to their story. Unless there is an objection, they also pray together. Then working with the budget and established criteria, they look for the best way to help. In some cases that is helping them directly, in others it means connecting them with another agency or group that can do more for them.

In any case, it is our way of reaching out to those in need.

Help is needed to respond to the requests for assitance. If you are interested in more information contact Deacon Eldon Laube at 402-339-3285 ext 105 or elauber@saintcolumbkille.org

As mentioned in all of the Masses last weekend, more help is needed to respond to the requests for help. The group is meeting tomorrow (Tuesday) at 7:00 pm in the Social Level for a more detailed explanation of how the group works for those who may feel led to help.

Thanks Use It Again Sale

Saturday the Annual Use it Again Sale ended.

All of the money raised goes to the St. Vincent
de Paul fund to help those in need in our community.

We thank ReRuns R Fun who allowed
the sale to take place at their site.

This year over $22,000 was raised
breaking last year's record.

That would not have been possible without the generosity
of all the disciples who used their talents to make the sale happen.

Thank you!
