Feast of Peter & Paul

This feast day commemorates the martyrdom of the two great Apostles, assigned by tradition to the same day of June in the year 67 during the persecutions of Emporer Nero after Rome burned. They had been imprisoned in the famous Mamertine Prison of Rome and both had foreseen their approaching death. Saint Peter was crucified upside-down at his request as he felt unworthy to die the same way as Jesus; Saint Paul, a Roman citizen, was beheaded by a sword.

But it is their lives and not their deaths that make them memorable. Peter was fishing in Galilee when he was called by to be one an apostle. Peter was poor and unlearned, but candid, eager, and loving. In his heart and then from his lips came the spontaneous confession: “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God!” Jesus chose and prepared him to be the Rock on which He would build His Church.

Scripture is alive with Saint Peter; he is mentioned no less than 160 times in the New Testament. But it is after Pentecost that he stands out in the full grandeur of his office. He sees to the replacement of the fallen disciple; he admits the Jews by thousands into the fold and in the person of Cornelius, opens it to the Gentiles; he founds and for a time rules the Church at Antioch.

While linked on this day, Peter and Paul sometimes appear in the Bible as rivals. We can wonder about the dynamics between them: Peter got his commission straight from the Savior himself while the upstart Saul of Tarsus arrived with the zeal of the converted and went from persecuting Christians to appropriating their doctrine, even calling Peter out publicly. So it is great to see the unity they symbolize in sharing this feast day.

Fixin' & Cleanin'

There had been a number of leaks in the rectory over the last few years. Now that Bill Heese and the maintenance crew seem to have those plugged, Deacon John Zurek came in and patched the ceiling in and around Deacon Eldon Lauber's office.
Also, this has been the annual week for carpet cleaning. Monday through Wednesday all of the daily Masses were held in the Social Level so the carpet could get cleaned. It was finished just in time for the Vacation Bible School's Mass today.

Hopefully you notice the difference this weekend.

Santa Eulalia

Yesterday at VBS we learned about our
sister school in Santa Eulalia, Guatemala.

We learned that we are a lot alike.

We like to do activities.

And we like to get our picture taken.

But some families struggle to pay their tuition which is
about $45 per year. That means some families have to
choose which of their children to send to school.

This morning each child or family who donated
$5 or more to Santa Eulalia got to ring
the bell before the start of VBS.

Thank you to everyone who is helping
our friends at Santa Eulalia!
If you missed it today,
you can do it tomorrow.

It was a fun first day, at VBS

We sang songs together ...

read from the bible ...

visited Rhoda's house...
( Ask a VBSer, why was Rhoda so scared?)

painted colorful pirate bandannas ...

played outdoors once the sun came out ...

talked about ways we see God at work in our lives ...

and had a great snack.

We also shared pirate and sailor hats as well as cool eye patches.

Bible Point: God’s Word is True.
Bible Verse: “But you are near, O Lord, and all your commands are true.” (Psalm 119:151)
Bible Story: God frees Peter from prison. (Acts 12:1-19)

Summer Religious Formation Finishes

With 245 students and 95 % attendance, yesterday we finished another successful session of Summer Religious Formation. By attending Religious Formation each morning for two weeks, students have more class time than they would have going once a week during the year.

Because this is the second year of the program, the first day some of the classes were tested for what they remembered from last year and we were delighted with their retention. One tweak from last year is that if parents want their child to participate next summer, they will need to attend a couple family catechises events during the school year.

Yesterday one of the closing events was an all-formation Mass.

Thank you to all the families that shared their child with us!

Sacropoly

Sometimes learning about Sacraments is all fun & games.

Miss Schafer's 5th grade Religious Formation
students studied the seven sacraments the first week.

Then they were assigned to design a
game that would teach the sacraments.

Then they brought them to class and played.

Great job!
